Probably the most exciting "where to find birds in Australia" publication is the mobile device application (App) due for release in June 2015.
Being in a digital format it will fit most phones and tablets, weigh nothing and will cost very little ($6.95 Profits from app sales will be donated to bird conservancy). Further it can be kept up to date and doesn't harm the environment with it's production. Birdwatchers are welcome to interact with the App by adding information for which they will be credited.
Maps. On the Where to find birds in Australia App there are interactive maps that will render even when out of mobile range. A technical hitch has delayed production.

There were two guides devoted to Australian birding sites. The best was The Complete Guide to Finding the Birds of Australia (now out of print) by Richard & Sarah Thomas. Where to Find Birds in Australia by John Bransbury is quite outdated being first published in 1987 and reprinted in 2000 without alteration. Unfortunately, Where to Watch Birds in Australasia & Oceania by Nigel Wheatley contains many errors in the Australian sections and is not recommended. This book weighs 1.170 kilograms or more than 345 grams more than the latest Thomas & Thomas (Mar 2011) and as such I have re-priortised the review. It won't be soon.

Nov 2013. Pizzey & Knight Birds of Australia Digital Edition - Gibbon Multimedia Australia - $69.95

One of the prime reasons for buying this app would be to have well researched birdwatching sites listed on your mobile device and so as you travel around Australia the information is at your finger tips.
I have looked at some of the 250 birding sites. The few that I have tried so far have been poorly researched and misleading. It is as if the researcher/s have not been to the sites and the details have just been plucked from an old guide book. In particular I have looked at the Queensland's Wet Tropics, which is Australia's richest birdwatching region, and find it very disappointing, and maybe even dangerous. Why an expensive (time and cost) trip to Green Island is suggested defies belief. The DERM websites quoted in the text have not been in use since March 2013. There is just mistake after mistake along with some very strange suggestions. Two major points for using digital multimedia over print media are conservation and mistakes can be corrected and updates issued instantaneously and that might justify my $70 investment. I wonder, are the corrections and updates on the way?

Best 100 birdwatching sites in Australia in book and eBook form.

Good read, and it appears that the sites are well researched.
